Declaration of Interdependence: Psychology, Ecology, and Sustainability
The opening plenary was presented by Dick Roy and Thomas Doherty, Psy.D. Dick considered the motivating factors behind bringing the conference together. Thomas gave an overview of the topics addressed at the PES conference, including a critical history of the Ecopsychology movement and an introduction to other ideas in psychology useful for addressing environmental issues, such as Environmental Psychology and Conservation Psychology.
Dick Roy is the co-founder of the Northwest
Earth Institute, the Oregon Natural Step Network, and the Center for Earth
Leadership.
Thomas Doherty is a licensed psychologist in
Portland, Oregon with a general practice of psychotherapy and specialties in
wilderness therapy and applying environmental and sustainability concepts to
personal health. He is the chairperson of the Public Education Committee for
the Oregon Psychological Association.
