Vision for the Center for Earth Leadership
The Center was founded on a singular vision. Within the Northwest citizens will provide the essential leadership to a sustainable culture in the region. In doing so, the region will become a model for the nation.

The Center was founded on a singular vision:
citizens will provide the essential leadership to a
sustainable culture. Individuals have immense potential to assume an expanded leadership role in daily life by (1)
reducing personal impact on the earth, (2) being an agent of change, and (3)
being an assertive advocate for the earth.
As a strategy, the Center develops classes and workshops for citizens who seek to assume a greater leadership role or to increase their capacity; facilitates projects for targeted groups where untapped leadership potential exists; and organizes events to support its programs.
All programs are grounded in the following premises:
- To create a sustainable region, the consumer culture must change in a fundamental way.
- Citizens must lead; businesses, institutions, and public agencies do not have the freedom to be assertive drivers of fundamental change.
- Each citizen has immense capacity to accept personal responsibility for the earth.
- People learn at a profound level through self-discovery.
- Motivation, not education, is the principle impediment to assuming a leadership role. Center programs facilitate the deepening of one’s commitment to protect the earth.
The Center was founded by Jeanne and Dick Roy, nationally recognized leaders in the sustainability movement. The Roys are also co-founders of the Northwest Earth Institute and the Oregon Natural Step Network.
